On average, electric vehicle batteries last anywhere from 10 to 20 years. That’s longer than the duration of most people owning a vehicle and the life span of an average gas-powered internal combustion engine. However, there are several factors that can affect the longevity of your EV battery.

1. Minimize Rapid Charging

Rapid charging is ideal only If you’re on a long drive and need to charge your car quickly. However, doing this regularly will lead to faster wear of the battery. Charging your EV at a normal rate using its dedicated charger is better for your battery’s health.

2. Maintain Battery Level Between 20% and 80%

Avoid draining your battery or keeping it completely fully charged. It’s advisable to change the settings on your car or charger to limit the charge to around 80% and keep it above 20%. Even when maintaining your battery level at this range, your EV will still be able to run for about a week.

3. Only Charge Your EV to 100% if Needed

For long trips, it’s best to have your EV battery on a full charge. Doing this occasionally won’t degrade your battery. Before your trip, make sure to check if there are charging stations along your route. This will help you determine whether you need to charge your EV to 100%.

4. Avoid Parking Your Car for a Long Period

Leaving your EV parked for weeks or months can accelerate the wear on the battery. You should take it for a quick drive every now and then.
