Common HVAC Noises: What Do They Mean?
HVAC systems are far from quiet, but sometimes they produce unnatural noises that should warrant your attention. These noises range from rattling to metal clanking, and each one is due to a specific problem within the system itself.
As your experienced local HVAC contractors, Green Air Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. discusses these common HVAC noises and what they mean.
Rattling
This is the most common noise you’ll hear from your HVAC system and can mean several things. Its most common source, however, is likely from debris that has entered the system. While the HVAC system does have a grate, it only keeps out larger debris; smaller particles, such as twigs and dirt, will still find their way inside.
Hissing
A hissing sound coming from your HVAC means that air is escaping from your system. If the sound is coming from the wall, it’s likely that the ducts are leaking and causing air to leak through the walls when it should be circulating around your home. This requires immediate HVAC repair as it can cause your utility bills to go up and affect your comfort levels.
Clanking
HVAC systems aren’t completely silent and you’ll usually hear this ambient humming sound when you’re close to it. If what you hear is a jangling noise, though, it’s a sign that some parts of the system have come loose. It could be a detached set of blades, pipes, or even a motor fan.
These sounds are a warning sign for more serious HVAC concerns. Failure to address loose components can cause considerable damage to other internal components in addition to reducing airflow. In such cases, call us immediately.
