How to Diagnose and Troubleshoot Solar Panel Problems

Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are a great way to save on home electricity costs. Owning them, however, comes with some challenges. Performance issues can affect the solar panels, undermining your savings if not addressed promptly. Local solar panel company Green Air Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. shares ways to diagnose and troubleshoot some of the most common solar PV system problems.

Checking the Breaker Switch

At some point, the system may not deliver solar electricity to your home. In the event of a surge, glitch or overload, you can expect the breaker switch to trip as a result. Switching it back to its proper position is usually enough to fix the issue. Otherwise, you need to call the company responsible for installing the system for a thorough inspection.

Inspecting for Obstructions

As long as they are unobstructed, solar panels can generate adequate amounts of electricity for your home. If there are trees planted on your property, make sure to cut back overhanging branches that might be blocking out light. However, if your solar PV system is still underperforming, you might be dealing with dust, debris and pollen accumulating on the surface of the panels. Hose them off at least two or three times a year and use a soft push broom to remove the buildup.

Examine Your Solar Inverter

Almost all solar PV system installations come with an inverter that turns the direct current (DC) electricity from the solar panels into alternating current (AC) electricity for your home’s appliances and electronic items. A steady, green light means that it is working as it should; otherwise, call your solar panel installer as soon as possible for an in-depth assessment.
