What to Do in Case Your AC Doesn’t Turn On

An air conditioner malfunction can impact the overall comfort of your home. It’s the last thing you want to encounter on a hot day, so it helps that you know what to do in case it doesn’t turn on. Of course, if all else fails, you must get in touch with your local HVAC technician to diagnose the problem. Here are some of the troubleshooting steps to keep in mind.

Step #1: Check the Thermostat

The thermostat is the main control for your air conditioning system. If it is battery-powered, it’s likely that the juice has run out and needs a fresh set. See if it is set correctly to your desired settings as well. The ideal temperature setting should be at least three degrees cooler than the room temperature. Check the wiring, too, if possible.

Step #2: Check the Circuit Breaker

If the wiring seems to be in perfect order, check your breaker panel (or fuse box) to make sure that the correct circuit has power getting through. The main AC unit is usually connected to its dedicated switch or breaker. If this has tripped, try resetting it and seeing if the issue is resolved.

Step #3: Check the Air Filter

Air filters should be checked and changed every one to three months to maximize efficiency, improve air quality, and prevent problems with the unit. Dirty filters reduce airflow and performance, so be sure to clean or replace them accordingly.

Step #4: Check the Condenser Unit

Your AC’s condenser unit regulates heat by taking in air, cooling it off, and pumping the cool air into your living space. Dirt and debris around a condenser unit reduce its efficiency over time. Be sure to clear any obstructions that may be lying around.

If you’ve taken these steps and the AC system still isn’t turning on, it’s an indication of an issue within the unit. It’s likely the evaporator coils or compressor is having problems that prevent the whole system from working as intended.
