Do’s and Don’ts of Electric Vehicle Charging

Unlike gasoline-powered cars, electric vehicles require charging to run. If you own an electric vehicle, you must ensure that its batteries are in great condition. Lithium-ion batteries, which are also used in cell phones and laptops, may experience some level of damage over time. Once your EV’s battery loses its efficiency, it may impact your driving range.

Get the most out of your EV’s batteries by following dos and don’ts from your trusted HVAC and solar panel company, Green Air Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc.

DO Time Your Charge

You may prefer plugging in your EV battery all night so it can charge while you sleep. However, it’s best not to leave it on the charger for too long. If your charger has a timer, be sure to set it to shut off at least an hour or two before you leave in the morning.

DON’T Reach 100% Full Charge

The lithium-ion batteries of your EV should be charged up to around 80% capacity instead of 100%. According to research, this helps ensure the batteries’ longevity and health, especially if you use your EV for daily driving. Plus, it allows space for regenerative braking to convert kinetic energy into usable energy.

DO Keep It Cool

Make sure to park your EV in a shady spot on a hot day. By doing so, you prevent your battery from overheating and draining your charge. In addition, you may want to put your battery on charge while it’s parked to keep it from draining.

DON’T Use Quick Charge

While it can be tempting to use a quick charge on your EV battery to get it to charge fast, it may take a little life away from your battery, especially in extreme cold. By reducing quick charging, you ensure your battery’s health and performance.

By following these do’s and don’ts of electric vehicle charging, rest assured your EV will remain in great shape for the long run.
